Sound Science for Horticulture & Fresh Produce

In the fresh produce sector there is increasing public awareness of the use of pesticides and the presence of residues on foodstuffs. At the same time food retailers are demanding increasingly high levels of accuracy in data produced.

Soil and plant foliar tests guide grower’s decisions on soil fertility and plant nutrition. Water tests are available to determine the suitability for irrigation in relation to soil water deficit. Fruit can be tested for storage suitability. Topsoil can be examined for potentially zootoxic and phytotoxic elements and soil physio-chemical tests can help determine the soil textural classification, cation exchange, organic matter and pH.

Compost is used widely in horticulture and helps to improve soil structure and enrich the nutrient content of the soil. As a result of the Landfill Directive and the Quality Compost Protocol there is an increasing interest in composting and NRM, which is an approved laboratory for compost testing, can provide analysis of composted waste under the Association for Organics Recycling BSI PAS 100 Certification Scheme.
