Sound Science for Agriculture

Analysis is an important part of good agricultural practice and fundamental to the decision making process in farming businesses.

In particular, because of the increasing demand for food traceability from the primary producer, through the food chain to UK consumers, there is now a much bigger need to justify agrochemical and fertiliser use through soil testing and analysis of manures and plant tissue. Also, in its various codes of good practice, Defra is now recommending analysis to minimise the risks of environmental pollution.

NRM currently analyses over 400,000 agricultural soil samples every year for basic nutrients. The company also offers a range of more sophisticated analytical packages as required. 

Soil analysis allows farmers to tailor their fertiliser requirements to meet plant needs and so optimise yield whilst minimising environmental risk. It can also be used to identify pests and assess the soil’s texture, moisture and strength properties.

Plant tissue analysis helps farmers and their advisers identify crop nutrient and trace element deficiencies and assess the quality of grassland for grazing.

Analysis of manures and slurries provides information on the fertiliser value of these farm waste products allowing farmers to make savings in inorganic fertilisers and helping to reduce the risk of pollution.

Manure & Slurry Analysis

There has been increasing government and advisory pressure for the analysis of manures applied to farm land. Already, manures have a critical value for nutrition in Organic farming systems.

Measuring and realising the true value of manures and slurry, in both organic and conventional farming systems, is becoming evermore critical.  NRM analyse slurry and manure samples supplied by its customers, to enable them to make accurate savings in inorganic fertiliser and help them prevent pollution. The service comprises the analysis of total major and trace elements and a report providing the fertiliser value of the farmyard manure.

Fertilisers
Fertilisers are necessary to replace the nutrients that have been removed from the soil. They can provide an optimal nutrient balance, tailored to the demands of the specific crop, soil and climate conditions, increasing crop yield and quality. The tests indicated below are suitable for compound and blended fertilisers

Liming Materials
Agricultural soils tend to acidify over time. Factors contributing to this natural reduction in pH include leaching and the addition of fertilisers. Liming materials are applied to the land to counteract this process. The quality of the Liming material is assessed by its fineness and its neutralising power.
